Alternate Timelines
"Back, back... Forth and forth..."
If you're like me, you were probably confused by all the time-hopping and near-paradoxes that appeared in BTTF 1, 2 and 3. After seeing Doc's diagram in BTTF 2 as he tried to explain to Marty why they couldn't go forward in time in the "Bad 1985", I thought "Wouldn't it be cool to draw out all the alternate timelines and show how many trips the DeLorean made in all 3 movies?". So that's exactly what I did.
Pictured below is a graphical representation of all the trips the DeLorean made (as best a person can tell from the dialogue in the movies), and all the timelines that were created because of each jump through time.
According to what I could tell from the movie dialogue, the DeLorean made approximately 14 trips through time. Each trip is listed below:
- Einstein ahead 1 minute
- Marty to 1955
- Marty to 1985
- Doc & Einstein to 2015
Doc & Einstein further ahead to see what happens to Marty
- Doc back to 1985 to get Marty
- Marty, Jennifer & Doc to 2015
- Biff steals DeLorean and goes to Nov. 12, 1955
- Biff returns DeLorean to Oct. 21, 2015
- Marty, Doc, Jennifer & Einstein "return" to the Bad 1985
- Marty & Doc travel back to 1955
- Doc accidentally travels to 1885
- Marty travels back to 1885 to get Doc
- Marty travels to 1985 (the DeLorean's final trip through time)
